Nursing Facilities
The cost of care in California’s nursing homes averages about $6,700 a month. While some people can afford to cover the bill alone or with help from family members and insurance, others get help from Medi-Cal and other government programs — especially for lengthy stays. Medicare and private insurance typically cover skilled care in a nursing home for a few months after a hospitalization, but they do not cover long term stays.
The cost of the more medically complex care provided in a Congregate Living Health Facilities (CLHF) is difficult to estimate, since all are independently owned and allowed to set their own rates. Base rates are similar to the cost of nursing home care, but the more help that is needed — with bathing, grooming, dressing, and medications — the more costly the care. Neither Medicare nor Medi-Cal cover the cost of care in a CLHF, except for very limited help with some therapy and nursing visits and for hospice care at the end of life.
Life insurance, annuities, and long term care insurance might help pay some of the costs of care in nursing facilities.
