The cost of care in California’s facilities for the developmentally disabled averages about $200 per day. Most of that is paid by Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program.
Private long term care insurance policies typically do not cover care or services in ICF/DD facilities. For a small number of people, the federal health insurance program Medicare may offer limited help paying for some therapy and nursing visits, and for hospice care at the end of life. And some may get help from the Department of Veterans Affairs or government financial assistance programs.
