Developmentally Disabled

These facilities, commonly called “intermediate care facilities for the developmentally disabled,” or ICF/DDs, provide housing and meals to people of all ages who, because of their mental or physical conditions, need 24-hour care and supervision.

The care includes help with eating, dressing, bathing, grooming, other personal hygiene, and managing medications. In most such facilities, nursing care is available daily, but not around the clock. Care is offered that cannot be provided easily at home, such as help with tracheotomies, feeding tubes, and catheters. There are nearly 1,200 such facilities in California — the majority of them small, homelike, and privately owned.

California licenses several types of facilities specifically for those with developmental disabilities — defined as conditions originating before 18 and likely to continue throughout life — including mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and autism.
