7. Multipurpose Senior Services Program

A care management program, the Multipurpose Senior Services Program (MSSP) exists at 41 sites throughout California that manage the social and health care needs of frail elderly clients who want to stay in their communities and receive care at home.

Staff members determine client eligibility according to cost limitations and Medi-Cal criteria. Also, clients must be 65 or older, live within a site's service area, and be certified or certifiable for placement in a nursing facility.

The program also offers a variety of other services, including:

  • Adult day care providing social, psychosocial, and related support services in a protective setting;
  • Housing assistance, which may include help with physical adaptations and assistive devices, emergency relocation, temporary lodging expenses, and assistance in restoring utility services;
  • Assistance with chores and personal care;
  • Respite care to relieve caregivers;
  • Transportation to health and social service providers;
  • Meal services;
  • Social services, including visiting, counseling, and money management; and
  • Communications services such as translation and interpretive services and establishing emergency response systems.
