5. Alzheimer's Day Care Resource Centers
These centers provide day care for people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementia who need moderate to severe levels of care and have behavioral problems, making it difficult for them to participate in other programs.
The goal is to postpone institutionalization, provide support for caregivers, and increase public knowledge about Alzheimer's disease. Another goal of this community-based resource is to make training opportunities available to professionals and others providing care and treatment for the growing population of those who have Alzheimer's and other dementia.
The centers offer clients activities to help keep them physically and mentally engaged -- and they develop an individual plan of care to keep each client functioning at the highest level possible.
People who have been diagnosed as having Alzheimer's disease or other dementia are eligible to participate, without regard to age or financial resources.
Approximately one-third of the centers operate as adult day health care centers, which are licensed by the California Department of Health Services and accept clients who are eligible for Medi-Cal. Those at other centers are asked to share in the cost of care, although sliding scale fees are available from most providers for those who need financial help.
